Advance planning is a must. You're going to have to do all of your shopping for furniture and accessories without your child noticing shipMents and boxes. One of the best ways to do shopping these days is online, and you can have stores ship your purchases to a friend's house until the day of the princess room makeover. Make sure to check on shipping costs for the items you buy, and try to find a store that has everything you need rather than shopping around.

When shopping, choose items that are sturdy, with durable construction as well as long-lasting appeal. Avoid cheap plastic or cartoon-character items - those models will pass from your child's favor quickly when fads change and the next cartoon character comes along. Sturdy wood with a classic appeal is the better choice.

Make sure to select furniture that is sized to your child's little stature. Safety first above all. Provide children with furniture they don't have to climb or stretch to use. ChAirs and tables should be to their size, not adult size, and smaller beds are safer than adult-sized single beds. The Magical Rocking Horse offers scaled down children's furniture that is solid and durable.

Look for themed furniture such as four-poster beds and small vanity sets with a table, mirror, and chAir. This type of princess furniture will set the theme of your room, and you can add accessories that fit right in. Four-poster beds are great, because you can add a dowel and hang voile curtains for a true princess-style sleeping areas. Canopies of see-through sheer material or netting are easy to make and hang. Here are some instructions for princess-themed bed canopies. Add a small rocking chAir near a bookcase, and you're ready to accessorize.

Choose bedding that reflects a fairy princess theme. Flowers and leaves are good choices, as are pale pinks or blues for colored bedding. Avoid white bedding, as children will get whites dirty very quickly. Dust ruffles and ruffled pillowcases are a must, and choose curtains over blinds. Avoid bright primary colors or thick, heavy materials for all bedding, as lighter materials leave more of a fairy princess impression. Make sure that the bedding pattern or color is not the primary focal point of the room, and let the smaller accessories add touches of brightness instead.

Pay attention to lamps that offer soft lighting or those that have patterned shades that allow stamped-out stars or moons shine on the walls. Figurines of fairies are a nice touch; place these out of reach and somewhere the child won't climb to touch them. Purchase a mirror with an ornate frame to hang in the room or, alternatively, choose a picture frame and have a mirror fitted inside. Drape garlands of flowers and ribbons over Dressers or hang a wreathe of vines and flower buds on the wall. These are easy to make using fake flowers and vine wire purchased from discount craft stores.

The furniture will create the base theme of the room, and all the little things you add will help create an aura of fairy tale princess. Using your creativity and imagination with small items you can purchase at discount stores is the best. Larger items that cost more won't carry off the theme as well as an assortMent of tiny items with a delicate (and budget conscious) appeal.

Carry out the room makeover when your daughter will be away from home. Have her go on a sleepover night at a friend's house or at her grandparents, and then start decorating!

How to Build Your Own Cuckoo Clock

How to Build Your Own Cuckoo Clock

Of all the various kits available from hobby stores and websites across the Internet, cuckoo clock kits are very rare indeed. Why is this? Two reasons: one is that as simple the cuckoo clock's design may seem (after all, it was invented in 1730), it is actually very complicated and can only be replicated by masters. Minor defects in construction will render the moveMent meaningless with regard to telling accurate time. There is then the added difficulty of the simulated cuckoo sound.

How to Build Your Own Cuckoo Clock

As easy as it is to assemble finished parts at a company that has been doing it for a few hundred years, it's very difficult for a beginner to achieve the same success – even when using the same parts. Also, since most of the artistry that draws people to appreciate the cuckoo clockis the look and sound of the finished product, there is no way to create a hand carved, artistic finished cuckoo clock and then disassemble it so somebody else could put it together. It simply cannot be done.

But rest your fears. For the ambitious cuckoo clock enthusiast there remains one way to create a totally unique cuckoo clock on your own. The company clockworks.com specializes in selling parts for all clocks, cuckoo clocks included, can sell you all of the individual parts you will need to create the inner workings of a basic cuckoo clock. You'll pay quite a bit more then you would if you were simply to buy a finished cuckoo clock but that isn't what you're looking for, now is it?

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

Real wood furniture is the most popular furniture in
existence. It's been around for hundreds of years and
probably existed when the cave people got Tired of squatting
on the dirt floor of their caves and looked around for a
better way.

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

3 Kinds Of Wood Used In Real Wood Furniture

The woods that are fashioned into furniture fall into three
categories:

1. Hardwoods

2. Softwoods

3. Composites

Even the term ' hardwood ' or ' softwood ' is deceptive.
Hardwoods aren't necessarily harder, denser material. For
example, balsa wood is one of the lightest, least dense
woods there is, and it's considered a hardwood. Technically,
lumber is classified based on how the tree reproduces. As to
general rule, though, softwood trees are evergreen year
round while thehardwoods create the gorgeous autumn foliage
that we all love so much.

Hardwoods are considered the highest quality and are the
most expensive. Their natural colors vary from the darkest
woods to the lightest ones and and they can be stained or
painted for even more variety. Hardwood furniture is least
likely to warp or bend and is prized in all high quality
homes. The five woods most commonly used in furniture
production are cherry, walnut, oak, maple and mahogany.

Softwoods are less expensive than hardwoods, but they
require extra care. Because they are less durable, it's much
easier to scratch or dent softwood furniture. In addition,
they often don't have the beautiful grains of a hardwood,
and therefore don't stain asbeautifully.

Pine is an example of a softwood that is commonly used for
furniture. These woods are often used in construction as
well I know the choicest pieces are reserved for furniture. In
construction, knots and splits are common. Lots of
construction lumber will not accept paint and this kind of
wood is used for shelves or packing crates.

The softwood used in furniture is designated as "Appearance"
lumber and includes most softwood lumber that has been
custom milled to a pattern or otherwise surfaced on all four
sides.

Composites are the cheapest form of wood and are literally
manufactured, rather than grown.

1. Plywood: multiple layers of thin wooden sheets are glued
together and pressed.Plywood is strong and resists
swelling, shrinking and warping. There is some furniture
made directly from plywood, but generally it is only used as
to support when incorporated into furniture.

2. Particle board: sawdust and small wood chips are mixed
with glue or resin which is then shaped and pressure
treated. When used for inexpensive furniture, particle board
is usually covered with laminate or veneer. This is
necessary because particle board splits easily and the
laminate prevents splitting. However, the downside is that
the laminate may separate from the wood because the particle
board responds to temperature and pressure changes by
swelling and shrinking.

3. Hardboard: is made like particle board but it's placed
under higherpressure so it's stronger.

4. MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard: wood particles are
bonded with resin and compressed. It is harder than particle
board or hardboard, and can be cut like plywood although it
isn't as strong as plywood. Some MDF is covered with
melamine which is a durable plastic in a variety of colors.
The exposed edges of MDF are rough and need covering with
molding or some other decorative material.

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

Are you planning on having a house built? Are you planning a renovation on the current place you are living in? Are you planning on getting a vacation home somewhere in your favorite vacation spot? If yes is the answer to any of these questions, you might want to explore the idea of designing a bedroom of your house in advance.

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

Online Bedroom Design: A Creativity Exercise

You might want to do it so that it reflects your personality, or perhaps to just find out how creative you can be. You can do it even if you are not an architect or an interior designer; you don't even need to hire one to do it for you. You can do this yourself, and all you need is a Computer, Internet, and an imaginative mind. Yes, you can design a bedroom online.

There are websites out there that specifically deal with online bedroom design. They usually have previews for you to take a look at so you would have an idea on how to go about it. Or, if you are really prepared and would want to do it yourself, that is a legitimate option too. There are three important steps on how to design a bedroom online.

First, you need to see the color combinations you will use. Maybe you would like your room to be painted in blue. What shade of blue? There are hundreds of color combinations of shades of blue. Online bedroom design websites usually offer this option so you can mix and match which paint colors to use. You can also check to see the color combination of the walls with the flooring, ceiling, furniture, so you can have a "color preview" of what your bedroom will look like.

Next is the layout design. How big will yourbedroom be? Where exactly will you place the furniture and other items such as the television, study table, restroom, doors, windows, and more? How big of the total space will they consume? You can answer all of these by properly designing the layout of your bedroom. If the first step deals with the color combinations, this second step deals with space and measureMents. You can check to see how many pieces of furniture you can place and how big they are and if they can fit or not (or if they are ideal or not).

Finally, the design plan itself. Calculate your total expenses by placing all the necessary information in a design plan. Included here are the sizes of the doors, windows, flooring, amount of paint to be used, etc. When you complete these necessities, you will have an idea ofhow much you will spend for the construction of your bedroom. The design plan is not only important for the calculation of expenses, but also for the exact date of your room-you will know every detail there is.

You might want to venture into designing your own bedroom online. It is a creative exercise and the satisfaction you will receive when the finished product is revealed while knowing that you were the one that designed it cannot be put into words. Whatever your motive is in designing your own bedroom, whether it is to reflect your personality or so you can test your creativity, it will be a fun thing to do. Remember, it is simple enough that all you need is a Computer, Internet, and an imaginative mind.

French Furniture, Louis XVI Style

French Furniture, Louis XVI Style

Even before the death of Louis XV in 1775, the furniture style associated with his reign was abandoned in favor of a simpler neo-classical style that was identified with his successor, Louis XVI.

Through the efforts of Madame Pompadour, a woman of refineMent, culture, education and wealth, the City of Pompeii, which was buried during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, was excavated. It revealed a city very much in the same state as it was when the eruption of the volcano buried it in 79 A.D. The excavation of Pompeii, a once glorious Roman resort, brought the Parisians new awareness and a surge of interest in classical ancient Rome. They were quickly captivated by the constant flow of ideas and drawings of Roman scrolls, monuMents and motifs.

The rococo style slowlyfaded as people started to take interest in the new discoveries. Louis XVI reigned during a period of 14 years from 1775 to 1789. The Louis XVI style advocates simpler, less ornate furniture design. Straight lines and simplicity are the guiding principles of this period. In Louis XVI architecture and furniture designs, the curves are eliminated and replaced by straight lines which is a total opposite to the Louis XV style. If ever there is curvature in the design, it is usually compass drawn and not free form. The chAir backs are usually oval, rectangular or shield form. The cabriole legs have been replaced with straight legs and are imitating the fluted columns of ancient Rome. Most pieces are usually houses in rectangular form and there are no more curves as the Bombs of LouisXV. This period doesn't have so much ornamentation in its design and often is not carved or painted either. It is usually finished in natural wood with mahogany the most commonly used. Since this period is so much influenced by the ideals of ancient Rome and Greece, the Louis XVI style is alternatively referred to as the Neo-Classical style.

The typical motifs of this period includes:

1. The lyre which is a classic Roman musical instrument.

2. Fluted legs imitating Roman columns with square blocks carved with rosettes at the top of legs.

3. Urns and columns.

Despite its difference from the Louis XV style, the Neo-Classical style of Louis XVI maintains the delicacy of its predecessor. It adheres to the size and grace of Louis XV rather than the massivesize of the baroque Louis XIV style. To better identify the Louis XVI style; here are its basic characteristics.

1. It has fluted, slim, straight legs usually topped with a square box with rosette carving.

2. It has drawn mechanical compass arc and curves; it is never free form.

3. Most furniture pieces contain classical motifs like columns, lyres and urns.

4. It adheres to the delicate construction of the previous style maintaining grace and delicacy in all its design.

The Louis XVI style furniture is very much used and applied in today's home decorating. Its simplicity yet delicacy and elegance appeals to today's decorating requirements.
